Kid's - Children's Dentistry

How important is children's dental health? According to the American Academy of Pediatrics web site(www.AAP.org),

"Dental caries is the most common chronic disease affecting children in the United States. It is 5 times more common than asthma and 7 times more common than hay fever."

That is why the AAP and the American Academy of Family Physicians (www.AAFP.org) instructs their members to refer children to a dentist by their first birthday.

(The American Dental Association recommend the first tooth or first birthday whichever is first.)

"Peek-A-Boo" appointment - For children who have recently had their first birthday. This is a complimentary visit. This is an informative visit in which we will discuss oral hygiene, tooth eruption patterns, nutrition, fluoride, early childhood cavities, injury/trauma prevention, and oral habits (pacifier, thumb and finger sucking).







Unfortunately, every dentist who treats children sees children with rampant cavities - extensive tooth decay. Cavities are the most common disease of childhood. Nearly half of all 4-year-old children have at least one cavity. Even some one-year-olds have cavities. This is part of the reason that dentists and physicians recommend early dental visits.

During the first dental appointment, the Glendale Family Dental Care will discuss what may cause tooth decay and how to prevent it. Tooth decay is most often caused by diet. Children should not be put to bed with a bottle filled with anything but water. Baby bottles filled with milk can cause rapid, extreme tooth decay. Chewy fruit snacks falsely advertised as a healthy substitute for fresh fruit and the rising use of soft drinks are another problem. You can help prevent decay by monitoring your child's diet, proper use of fluoride and thorough brushing.
